How to Create the Perfect Fairy Garden in Your Home

by | Mar 24, 2021

Are you looking into adding some whimsical fun to your backyard?

Whether you’re decorating with children in mind or you want a cute look for yourself, creating a fairy garden in your outdoor space takes your yard to a whole new level.

You don’t have to get a professional landscaper or designer to make your garden for you. With a few outdoor decorations, a few good flower choices, and a long weekend of fun work, you can create a magical space in your own yard.

Not sure how to get started? We’re here to help you set up the garden of your dreams. Keep reading to learn more.

Section off and Plan Your Space

Unless you want your entire backyard to be a playground for fairies, section off the space that you plan on filling with your fairy garden. This can be front and center right off of your patio or hidden away in a quiet corner. You can have your garden on the ground or place it somewhere at eye level, like in a planter.

If you have limited outdoor space, you can even put a small fairy garden on a patio or balcony with a few planters. Don’t limit yourself!

Once you’ve sectioned off enough space, draw up a quick plan for how you want to design your garden. Where are you going to place flowers? How many garden decor products are you going to use?

Once you have your space planned out, you’ll know that your not over or under-buying when it’s time to start gathering your supplies.

Choose a Theme

Not all fairy gardens are alike. While you can definitely make an eclectic garden without a strict theme, consider whether or not you want to get more specific.

Do you have a specific color scheme in mind? What about something like castles, or more casual like a little fairy village? When you have your theme in mind it’s easier to pick out the rest of the elements that go into your fairy garden.

Get the Right Plants

While any plants look great in a fairy garden, some work better than others for a true “magical” look.

When it comes to flowers, we suggest using natural wildflowers that grow in your area. Not only are they good for the environment, but they’re also easier to grow because they’re in their natural habitat.

If you want a cool overgrown look, try to find small plants with vines that can wind through your magical garden.

If you’re not opposed to some fungi friends, think about incorporating mushrooms into your garden. While these may attract a few pests, they’ll also give a true “fairy” look based on traditional fairy rings

If you want to keep animals away from your garden, consider choosing plants that keep them away. There are options that smell nice or look pretty, so you don’t have to worry about them ruining your aesthetic.

Don’t use anything toxic. Nature comes first.

Invest in Sweet Village Decorations

Now that you’ve placed all of your flowers, it’s time to decorate your space. How do you want to furnish your fairy garden?

You want to get things that are small enough that your fairies could use them. There are some things that you can make on your own, or that you can re-use old or unrelated items for.

Consider using dollhouse furniture or handmade miniatures to create a little fairy village. You want to include everything that a fairy might want, like small houses, benches, and places to sit for meals.

Birdhouses are great for fairy gardens, and they also provide a nice resting place for your local birds.

Imagine yourself sitting in the fairy garden and think about what you might need. Would you like to visit an ice cream truck? What about a swimming pool or pond?

Make sure that everything that you use is weather-resistant. You don’t want to ruin your garden with rust or mold.

Add the Right Accessories

After you have the bulk of your fairy village set up, it’s time to add any extra things that add some “oomph” to your space. After all, this garden is definitely more form than function.

Consider making this a crafting project. You can make tiny wreaths and flower crowns from things that you find around your yard. You can paint stones or make little paths to create a space that looks more “real.” If you’re making this garden with your children, consider turning this step into a rainy-day art project.

It’s also a good idea to add light to your garden if you want to be able to see it at all hours. String lights are also called “fairy lights,” so why not add them into the mix?

Wind them around any sturdy furniture or plants to give your fairy garden a whimsical glow.

Your decorations don’t have to stop with the garden itself. Why not add some flair to the surrounding area? You can make a person-sized path (or even a wisteria trellis path) to lead from the home to the fairy garden to build up that “whimsical” feeling.

You might also want to add some “people-sized” furniture and decorations to your garden area. Why not provide a place to sit and look at the garden?
